Privacy Policy
Mapped is a travel log: you mark the places you’ve been and see them on a map. This policy explains what information Mapped handles, why, and the choices you have. In short: we keep only what Mapped needs to work, we don’t sell your data, and there are no ads or trackers.
Who we are
Mapped is made by Samim Saidi, who is responsible for the information described here (the “data controller”). To reach us, use Contact us on the Profile tab in the app.
Your account
Mapped makes an account for you the first time you open it, so your passport is backed up and you can add friends. You don’t give us an email address or a password: the account is tied to a random key that Mapped keeps in your iCloud Keychain (Google’s Block Store on Android), which is how your places come back after a reinstall or on a new phone. We only store a scrambled version of that key.
To sync your passport and let you add friends, we store an identifier for your account, the name and username you choose, your places (with their dates, transport and notes), the cities and airports you add, and your friends list on our servers.
Mapped doesn’t access your device’s location, contacts or photo library.
Signing in with Apple or Google
Signing in with Apple or Google is optional, for example to get back an account you made that way before. When you do, we receive your name, your email address and, with Google, your profile photo, along with an identifier for your account. If you use Apple’s Hide My Email, we only see the relay address.
What friends see
Friends you accept can see your name, username, profile photo, which places you’ve marked and whether you lived there. They never see your dates, transport or notes.
Cities and airports you add are synced to your account so they’re there on all your devices, but they aren’t shared with friends.
Someone who searches for your exact username can see your name and profile photo and send you a friend request.
Services we use
Convex hosts our database and sign-in service. Apple and Google handle signing in. Mapbox draws the maps: to load them, your device connects to Mapbox, which receives standard technical information such as your IP address and may collect anonymous usage data under its own privacy policy.
When Mapped crashes or hits an error, it sends a crash report to Sentry so we can fix it. A report includes diagnostic data such as the crash log, your device model, its iOS or Android version and the app version. We use it only to keep Mapped working.
These providers may process data in the United States and other countries outside the EU and EEA. Where they do, they rely on safeguards the law requires, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
We don’t sell or rent your information, show ads, or use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
Photos
Mapped only asks for access to Photos when you save your passport card, and only to add that image. It never reads your library.
Why we use your information
We use your account information and places to give you the service you asked for: keeping your passport, syncing it between your devices and showing it to friends you’ve accepted.
We use crash reports because we have a legitimate interest in finding and fixing problems in Mapped. They don’t include your places, notes or name.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and places for as long as you have an account. When you delete it, we delete them from our servers.
Crash reports are kept for a limited time and then deleted automatically.
Your choices
Clear all visited data on the Profile tab removes every place you’ve marked, on this device and, if you’re signed in, in your account.
Delete account on the Profile tab permanently deletes your account, your synced places and your friendships from our servers.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including in the EU, EEA and UK, you have the right to ask for a copy of your information, to have it corrected or deleted, to receive it in a portable format, and to object to or restrict how we use it.
To use any of these rights, use Contact us on the Profile tab in the app. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Mapped isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above and let you know in the app about significant changes.
